Aaron - Thank you for being there for me last night. Coffee is ready to turn on. Have a good day. Hope

Such a simple and ineloquent note, and it pissed me off. I wadded up the small pink square of paper and threw it across the bedroom. I was glad I was there for her last night, too, and I had enjoyed our time together, but “have a good day” just didn’t cut it for me, not today, not after last night.

I got up to get ready. I had something that I needed to take care of.

After I showered and dressed, I donned a warm hoodie and put my tablet and headphones along with my medical files into my backpack and headed out. I was having breakfast at the coffee shop.

It was a little farther to the shop than from Levi’s house, but it was a nice day, and I felt pretty good. I’d already sent my sister a text message telling her she could pick me up at Beans & Books when it was time to go to my appointments.

An elderly gentleman held the door for me, and I tried to smile around my winded breathing. The place was busier than I expected, and one of the first things I heard spoken about was the fire in Dexter. I frowned as I approached the counter. Two women were briskly working, and I glanced around, looking for Hope.

When I caught the attention of one of them I asked, and the blonde girl with the name tag of Carrie said she was in back. I made my way to the pass-through. She didn’t say anything, and I wasn’t going to let her stop me if she had.

In fact, I was pretty sure that when I stepped through she said, “Go you, Mr. Findley,” under her breath.

I heard several voices in the back and approached them. When I reached Hope’s office, I saw Thad and several other men standing around. Thad turned at the sound of my crutches.

“What are you doing here, Aaron?”

“I came to check on Hope. What’s going on?”

“ATF and FBI wanted to talk to her. Hope called this morning and told me that she might have been the last one to speak with Lori, so they just wanted to ask her a few questions.”

“Hope was really torn up about it last night.”

Thad sighed. “I bet she was. She was asking about Grace, Lori’s daughter, this morning. No one can find family for her right now.”

“Where is the little girl staying?”

“County is letting the little girl stay with the babysitter’s family for a few more days while they try and track down family.”

“Man, I hope they find someone.”

“Yeah, me, too. I’d hate to see Grace go into the system.”

Just then, the group broke up, and the men began to walk toward us, and Hope saw me.

“Aaron, what are you doing here?”

“I came to check on you,” I replied as she paused in front of me. She tried to smile, but I saw the sadness in her face, and I reached up and brushed hair off her cheek.
